A guy over in North El Cajon called me on a Saturday morning. He had snapped his only key off in the ignition cylinder of his 1998 Grand Am, right at the bow, clean break. The stub was sitting just far enough inside that he couldn't get a grip on it.

I pulled up with my extraction kit, got the fragment out without damaging the cylinder wafers, decoded the cuts right from the cylinder while I had it accessible, and had a fresh key cut on site. The whole call ran under thirty minutes including the extraction.
He mentioned he'd called around first. One shop told him they'd need to pull the whole ignition assembly and order parts. I don't know what they were planning, but a 1998 Grand Am with a basic mechanical ignition doesn't need that kind of treatment for a broken key. Sometimes the job is just the job.
