1998 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a mechanical key and what does the replacement process look like?

A mechanical key is a metal key cut to a specific pattern that physically operates the locks and ignition cylinder. There are no electronic components involved. Replacement comes down to two approaches: if you have a working key, it can be duplicated directly. If all keys are lost or the key is broken, a locksmith decodes the lock cylinder or looks up the key code through vehicle records and cuts a new key to match.

Q: What tools does it actually take to make a replacement key for a 1998 Grand Am?

For a straight mechanical key like this, the work is about cutting equipment and lock service tools, not programming hardware. I carry precision key-cutting machines that work from a code or a direct decode of the cylinder, along with a full set of lock picks and broken-key extractors for tougher situations. The programming rigs stay in the van for a different class of job.

Q: I lost my only key for a 1998 Grand Am and I don't have the key code. Can you still make one?

Yes. This is a routine all-keys-lost job on a mechanical system. A locksmith can pick or decode the door lock or the ignition cylinder, read the cut pattern directly from the wafers, and produce a working key from that. No code on file is not a problem. The cylinder tells you everything you need to know. On a vehicle this age with a straightforward lock design, it's one of the cleaner all-keys-lost calls there is.

Q: My 1998 Grand Am key turns but the ignition feels stiff or the key is hard to remove. Is the cylinder going bad?

Pretty common on these. The ignition cylinders on late-90s GM compacts wear over time, especially if the key ring is heavy or the car has high mileage. A stiff turn or a key that binds on the way out usually points to worn wafers inside the cylinder or a worn key that no longer matches the cylinder precisely. A freshly cut key on a decoded cylinder often fixes the binding.

1998 Pontiac Grand Am Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy over in North El Cajon called me on a Saturday morning. He had snapped his only key off in the ignition cylinder of his 1998 Grand Am, right at the bow, clean break. The stub was sitting just far enough inside that he couldn't get a grip on it.

He'd already tried the broken-key extractor trick with a bobby pin. It did not go well.

I pulled up with my extraction kit, got the fragment out without damaging the cylinder wafers, decoded the cuts right from the cylinder while I had it accessible, and had a fresh key cut on site. The whole call ran under thirty minutes including the extraction.

He mentioned he'd called around first. One shop told him they'd need to pull the whole ignition assembly and order parts. I don't know what they were planning, but a 1998 Grand Am with a basic mechanical ignition doesn't need that kind of treatment for a broken key. Sometimes the job is just the job.

Pontiac Grand Am Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1998 Pontiac Grand Am key have any buttons or remote functions?▼

No. The 1998 Grand Am uses a plain metal key with no fob, no remote, and no buttons. It goes in the ignition, turns, starts the car. That's the whole system. If you want remote entry on one of these, it would have been a separate aftermarket add-on, not factory integrated into the key itself.
