2000 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Can you wipe out a lost or stolen remote so it no longer works on my car?

Yes. When we do a security reset or all-keys-lost job, we clear every remote ID stored in the vehicle and register only the ones you hand us. Any fob that was previously paired -- lost, stolen, or with an old owner -- stops working. It won't unlock the doors or do anything else tied to the remote system.

Q: My 2000 Grand Am uses a separate remote and ignition key. Does the fob have an emergency blade inside it?

No. This setup is different from a modern smart key. The fob is a standalone remote with no hidden blade inside -- it handles the door locks, trunk release, and panic only. Your separate metal ignition key is what gets you into the car physically. If you lose that ignition key, that's a separate job from the remote: we cut a new key to your vehicle and handle the transponder side so the engine will actually run. Keep both pieces.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my Grand Am. Can I program it myself or do I need a tech?

Depends on your situation. The 2000 Grand Am does have an onboard programming sequence -- it involves cycling the door locks and ignition in a set pattern to put the car into remote-learn mode. If you still have at least one working, already-programmed remote, you can use that sequence to add a second fob, including one you bought online, as long as you haven't exceeded the stored remote limit.

Q: My Grand Am remote works sometimes and fails other times. Is the fob dying or is something else going on?

Intermittent operation on these is usually one of three things: a weak CR2032, a corroded battery contact inside the fob housing, or a cracked solder joint on the circuit board from years of being dropped or sat on. Fresh battery is always the first move. If swapping the CR2032 doesn't fix it, open the fob and look at the contacts -- light corrosion is common on fobs this age and a quick clean can bring one back.

2000 Pontiac Grand Am Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Richland, over in San Marcos, I got a call from a guy who'd bought a Grand Am off a private seller. Car ran fine.

One problem: no remote came with it, just a single cut ignition key. He'd ordered a replacement fob online, watched a YouTube video about programming it himself, tried the sequence maybe a dozen times, and got nothing. He was ready to write the whole remote thing off as a lost cause.

I showed up and the first thing I did was check whether the vehicle still had any previously programmed remotes stored in its memory. It did. The old owner's fob was still in there, registered and valid, even though nobody had that fob anymore. That matters because on these vehicles the onboard programming sequence will only add to existing slots when a currently valid remote is present to initiate it. No working remote to kick off the process, and that self-program door closes on you.

So we went the reset route. Cleared the old stored remote out, enrolled his new fob fresh from a clean slate. Took maybe twenty minutes parked in his driveway.

He asked about the dealer afterward, kind of as an afterthought. They'd quoted him a couple days out and a price that made him wince. He'd paid a fraction of that, standing next to his own car.

Pontiac Grand Am Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2000 Grand Am?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer or a tow truck. All-keys-lost on these older GM vehicles means resetting the remote memory and re-enrolling new keys, and that work happens right where the car is sitting. No tow, no shop wait, no inflated dealer labor rate. The price I quote on the phone is the price you pay. Dealer all-keys-lost jobs on vehicles like this can run steep once you add the tow and the shop time.
