1997 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will a replacement key hold up?

A metal key cut correctly to your vehicle should last as long as you own the car. These don't have batteries to die or electronics to fail. Normal wear over years of daily use can eventually soften the peaks of the cuts, and if that happens the key may start to feel stiff or occasionally not want to turn in a worn cylinder. But that's years down the road. A good cut lasts.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. We stand behind our work. That said, if a correctly cut metal key stops turning, the conversation shifts to the lock cylinder, not the key. On a late-90s Grand Am, worn ignition cylinders are a real thing. The tumblers wear down over time, especially if the key ring is heavy and been bouncing around in there for years. We'll figure out whether it's the key or the cylinder and go from there.

Q: I lost my only key. Can you still make one without anything to copy from?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 1997 Grand Am is a normal job with no extra complications. I decode the lock directly or pull the key code through locksmith data tied to your VIN. Either way gets me to the correct cut without needing an existing key to duplicate. No OBD port work, no programming countdown, no waiting on a dealer to order anything. Just a lock decode and a cut.

Q: My key turns but the ignition feels stiff and grinds a little. Is that a key problem or something worse?

On a car this age, that feeling is usually the ignition cylinder wearing out, not the key itself. The tumblers inside the cylinder take a beating over decades of use and the tolerances get sloppy. A worn cylinder can also start to feel like it catches or resists before releasing to the start position.

1997 Pontiac Grand Am Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out near Moonlight Beach on a Tuesday afternoon. Guy called from the parking lot off B Street, said he'd lost his only key to his 1997 Grand Am and had been sitting there for about two hours already.

When I pulled up he had that specific look people get when they've mentally accepted they're about to spend a lot of money. He mentioned the dealer almost like a warning, said they told him a few days minimum just to get a key ordered and cut.

I decoded the door lock right there in the lot. Cut a new blade to match on the spot. Tested it in the door, then the ignition. Turned clean on the first try.

He just stood there for a second. I think he was waiting for a catch.

There wasn't one. It's a mechanical key. The whole job is the cut. I was back in my van and he was driving away in under thirty minutes, for a fraction of what the dealer wanted to charge him just to start the process.

Do you use OEM or aftermarket key blanks?▼

For a 1997 Grand Am, the key blank just needs to match the correct keyway profile for this vehicle. We use quality blanks that fit the cylinder properly and hold the cut accurately. There are no chips, no electronics, no frequencies to worry about here. The blank is the blank. What matters is that the profile fits and the cut is precise.
