2001 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is the difference between the remote fob and the transponder key on this car?

They work as a team but they do separate things. The remote fob is the plastic transmitter with the four buttons. It sends a radio signal to the car to lock the doors, unlock them, pop the trunk, or trigger the alarm. It runs on a CR2032 battery and has nothing to do with starting the engine. The key blade is where the transponder chip lives. When you turn the ignition, the car reads that chip.

Q: What if my key broke off inside the ignition?

That is a job I handle on site. I extract the broken piece first, then inspect the cylinder for damage. Snapped keys don't always break cleanly, and if the piece went in crooked it can bend the internal wafers in the cylinder, which causes sticking or makes the next key feel wrong even after the broken piece is out.

Q: I lost all the keys to my 2001 Grand Am. Can you still get into it and make a new key?

Yes, all-keys-lost on this generation is a standard job. No working key means no transponder in the system for the car to compare against, so the immobilizer memory gets cleared and a fresh key gets enrolled. I get into the vehicle first, then cut and program the new key at the car.

Q: My Grand Am starts fine but then stalls out after a second or two. Is that the key?

Start-then-stall on this vehicle often points to the immobilizer not fully accepting the transponder signal. It can happen with a worn key where the chip is inconsistent, or after a battery disconnect scrambles the learned data, or if someone installed a copied key that was never properly enrolled. It is not always obvious from the outside because the engine does fire, it just won't stay running. I diagnose that on site.

2001 Pontiac Grand Am Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Carmel Mountain Ranch, I got a call from a guy who had bought his Grand Am used about three months prior. Previous owner handed him one key and one fob, no extras. He'd been nursing both of them since day one.

The fob finally gave out first. He replaced the CR2032 himself, which was the right move, but the lock and unlock buttons still had maybe eight feet of range and the trunk button did nothing at all. He figured the fob was just old and toast.

When I got there I popped the fob open on the hood. The battery swap was fine but the internal contact board had a little corrosion on one corner, the kind that builds up over years in a pocket with loose change. That alone was killing two of the four buttons. He needed a replacement fob, not just a battery.

I programmed the new fob to the car at the curb, walked every button, checked range from across the parking lot, and popped the trunk twice just to make sure. Then I had him try the ignition to confirm the transponder side was still happy since we were already there.

He asked what the dealer would have charged. I told him to call and find out. He laughed and said he'd take my word for it.

Pontiac Grand Am Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am remote have?▼

Four buttons. Lock, unlock, trunk release, and panic. That matches the factory fob for this year. When I program a replacement, I verify all four functions before I leave your driveway. If you bought a used fob somewhere and it only has three buttons, that is the wrong unit for this vehicle.
