2005 Pontiac Grand Am
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

2005 Pontiac Grand Am Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy parked near his house off Scripps Poway Parkway, in South Poway. Said his 2005 Grand Am wouldn't start. He'd been driving it fine that morning, came back out after lunch, turned the key, and the engine cranked but immediately died. Happened three times in a row. He figured it was fuel or maybe the starter acting up.

It wasn't.

That crank-and-stall pattern on a Grand Am this age is almost always the immobilizer talking. The key turns, the engine fires, and then the security system kills it because something in the transponder communication didn't go the way it expected. He had the original key, so this wasn't a lost-key situation. It was a relearn situation.

I pulled up next to him in South Poway and we went through it on site. Checked the key, checked the transponder, walked through the relearn procedure. No tow. No waiting three days at a dealer for a "security system diagnostic." About thirty minutes total, most of which was the relearn timer doing its thing.

The dealer comparison came up on its own because he'd already called them before he called me. He mentioned what they quoted just to start the work. I didn't ask.

He drove home.
