1999 Pontiac Grand Prix
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is the FCC ID for the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix remote, and do I need to know it to get a replacement?

The factory FCC ID is printed on the back of your original fob. If your fob is lost or the label has worn off, you do not need to know it. The year, make, and model gets us to the correct remote. I identify the right part from the vehicle, not from whatever is printed on a label you no longer have.

Q: I lost all my keys to my 1999 Grand Prix. Can you still get me back in and make a new one?

Yes, and it is a common call. Getting into the vehicle without a key is handled with standard lockout tools on a car this age. Once you are in, the replacement key is cut to the lock cylinder, either by code lookup or by reading the lock directly on site. The remote side is a separate step. Once there is a working key, the new fob gets registered through the onboard programming procedure the vehicle already has built in.

Q: My 1999 Grand Prix starts and drives fine but the remote stopped working entirely. Is the fob dead or is something wrong with the car?

Almost always the fob, not the car. The remote receiver on these vehicles is separate from anything that affects starting or driving, so if the engine runs normally, the receiver module is likely fine. Start with the battery and contacts. If a fresh CR2032 and clean contacts do not bring it back, the circuit board inside the fob may have failed, which happens on remotes this old, especially if moisture got in through a cracked case.

Q: Can I program a replacement fob for my 1999 Grand Prix myself, or do I need a professional?

On a vehicle this age, there is an onboard programming procedure that does not require dealer equipment. You cycle through a sequence using the door locks and ignition to put the car into programming mode, then activate the new remote.

1999 Pontiac Grand Prix Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A call came in from Dictionary Hill in Spring Valley. The owner had a 1999 Grand Prix and one working remote left out of the original two. The working one was starting to act up, responding only when she held it inches from the door. The other fob had been dead for a while. She wanted a backup made before she ended up with nothing.

When I got there, she handed me the original remote. The case was cracked on one corner, the kind of crack that lets moisture in slowly over years. The battery contacts inside had a thin layer of oxidation on them, which explained the short range. The remote itself was not gone yet.

I cleaned the contacts, seated a fresh CR2032, and tested it. Range came back immediately. That took about four minutes.

The second part of the job was adding a new fob so she had a working spare. On a vehicle this age, the add-a-key process does not require factory equipment or a dealer. I ran the onboard programming sequence through the door lock and ignition, registered the new remote alongside her original, and walked every button on both fobs: lock, unlock, trunk, and the fourth button. Both remotes responded clean from across the parking area.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a trip-in fee just to look at it. She paid a fraction of that for the full job, done in her driveway, while she watched.

What battery does the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix key fob use?▼

CR2032. It is one of the most common coin cells out there, so it is easy to find. On these older GM fobs, the battery is only part of the story though. The contacts inside the case can corrode or lose tension over the years, so if a fresh CR2032 does not fix the range problem right away, the contacts are worth checking before you write off the whole remote.
