Got a call from a guy in Libby Lake, Oceanside. His 2006 Grand Prix would crank, catch for a half second, then die. He figured it was a fuel pump because it sounded like it was trying to run. He'd already priced fuel pumps online. I told him to check the security light first before he ordered anything.
He called back. Security light was on.
That changes the whole job. This wasn't a fuel pump. The car was cranking fine, which meant it was getting power and turning over, but the immobilizer was cutting fuel or ignition after that brief start attempt. Classic sign that the transponder in the key wasn't being read correctly.
When I got there, I plugged in and confirmed it. The key had been on the same ring as a house key, a gym fob, and probably eight other things. The plastic head had a hairline crack running right through it. The chip inside was reading intermittently at best. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't, and lately it was mostly not.
Cut a new key to the vehicle, programmed the transponder on site, and tested it a handful of times in a row to make sure it wasn't going to ghost him again. Ran fine every time.
He asked what the dealer would've charged. I told him to be glad he didn't find out the hard way. He'd already almost bought a fuel pump he didn't need.
