2008 Pontiac Grand Prix Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Got a call from a guy parked near the Lake Poway Area trailhead. He'd been out on the water, came back, and his only key wouldn't start the car. It was turning, engine was cranking, but it would die almost immediately after catching. Classic sign of the immobilizer not recognizing the transponder chip.
He thought the key was fine because it physically worked the ignition. That's the part that confuses most people. The blade and the chip are two separate jobs, and the chip side of his key had failed.
I pulled up, cut a new key blade to match the vehicle, and ran the programming sequence through the OBD port to enroll the new chip into the immobilizer. The whole thing took under an hour in the parking lot. He watched me do it, which I don't mind. People understand the job better when they see it.
What I didn't do was make him tow it anywhere. The 2008 Grand Prix was already a car that had been out of production for a while by the time he called me, and the dealer route would have meant waiting for parts and a service window that didn't fit his day.
He drove out of there and that was that.
