2004 Pontiac Grand Prix
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What is a transponder key and why does the 2004 Grand Prix need one?

The key blade is only half the job. Inside the head of a transponder key is a small chip that communicates with a receiver ring around the ignition cylinder. When you turn the key, the immobilizer checks for that chip's registered signal. If it doesn't recognize it, the engine starts and then cuts out within a couple of seconds.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much for a replacement key on a 2004 Grand Prix?

A few things stack up on their end. Parts markup through the service department, shop labor rates, and the fact that they typically want the car on their lot to do the work. If you don't have a working key to drive it in, that means a tow bill on top of everything else. The actual programming procedure on a 2004 Grand Prix isn't hours of work.

Q: My 2004 Grand Prix cranks but shuts off after two or three seconds. Is that the key?

That's the classic sign that the transponder chip isn't being recognized by the immobilizer. The engine starts because the blade turns the ignition correctly, then the security system cuts fuel or spark almost immediately when it doesn't see a valid registered chip. You'll usually see a security or theft-system warning light on the dash during or after this happens. It's not a coincidence.

Q: I bought a replacement key online for my 2004 Grand Prix. Can I program it myself?

If you have one working key already, GM offered an onboard relearn sequence on vehicles from this era that may let you add a second key without a scan tool. It involves a specific ignition-on sequence using the existing key. But if you're all-keys-lost, that sequence isn't an option because it requires a currently registered key to start the process. In that case, you need a programmer and the right software.

2004 Pontiac Grand Prix Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from someone parked on a side street in Downtown Lemon Grove. Said they'd had one key for years, lost it that morning, and the spare had gone missing sometime before that. No keys at all. Car sitting right where they left it.

This is one of those jobs that sounds complicated until you've done it enough times. All-keys-lost on a 2004 Grand Prix means you can't use any shortcut relearn. You need the OBD port, the right tool, and the procedure that tells the immobilizer to start fresh. The car doesn't know you're the owner. It just knows no registered key is present.

I pulled up, cut a new key to the vehicle right there on the street, then connected at the OBD port and ran the all-keys-lost procedure. The module clears the old registered keys and accepts the new one. There's a timed sequence in there that you just have to let run. Then the test: key in, engine cranks, doesn't die. That pause after the crank is the moment of truth on these. When it caught and stayed running, the job was done.

The owner had already called the dealer. They wanted the car towed in and said to plan on a few days. I had them driving in about 40 minutes, parked right there in Lemon Grove.

Pontiac Grand Prix Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix key have remote buttons, or is it just the transponder chip?▼

It depends on the setup you have. The 2004 Grand Prix can come with a separate key fob on the keyring, or with a key that has the remote built into the head. Either way, the transponder chip inside the key itself is what the immobilizer cares about. The remote functions are a separate matter. When we cut and program your replacement key, we handle the transponder enrollment.
