Does the 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix key have remote buttons, or is it just the transponder chip?

It depends on the setup you have. The 2004 Grand Prix can come with a separate key fob on the keyring, or with a key that has the remote built into the head. Either way, the transponder chip inside the key itself is what the immobilizer cares about. The remote functions are a separate matter. When we cut and program your replacement key, we handle the transponder enrollment. If you also need a remote paired, we take care of that on the same visit.

What is a transponder key and why does the 2004 Grand Prix need one?

The key blade is only half the job. Inside the head of a transponder key is a small chip that communicates with a receiver ring around the ignition cylinder. When you turn the key, the immobilizer checks for that chip's registered signal. If it doesn't recognize it, the engine starts and then cuts out within a couple of seconds. A blank key cut to the right profile will turn the ignition fine, but the car won't stay running without a programmed chip. That's the whole point of the system: a copied blade from a hardware store does nothing.

Why does the dealer charge so much for a replacement key on a 2004 Grand Prix?

A few things stack up on their end. Parts markup through the service department, shop labor rates, and the fact that they typically want the car on their lot to do the work. If you don't have a working key to drive it in, that means a tow bill on top of everything else. The actual programming procedure on a 2004 Grand Prix isn't hours of work. That's the classic sign that the transponder chip isn't being recognized by the immobilizer. The engine starts because the blade turns the ignition correctly, then the security system cuts fuel or spark almost immediately when it doesn't see a valid registered chip. You'll usually see a security or theft-system warning light on the dash during or after this happens. It's not a coincidence. If your key is worn, was copied at a hardware store, or you're using a key that was never properly programmed, that's exactly what you get. A correctly programmed key fixes it. If it keeps doing that even with a known-good programmed key, then the receiver ring around the ignition is worth checking.

I bought a replacement key online for my 2004 Grand Prix. Can I program it myself?

If you have one working key already, GM offered an onboard relearn sequence on vehicles from this era that may let you add a second key without a scan tool. It involves a specific ignition-on sequence using the existing key. But if you're all-keys-lost, that sequence isn't an option because it requires a currently registered key to start the process. In that case, you need a programmer and the right software. The key you bought online may work fine as the hardware once it's enrolled. Bring it to us and we'll do the programming on site in Lemon Grove rather than have you buy another key.
