1998 Pontiac Sunfire
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

1998 Pontiac Sunfire Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman in Casa de Oro, Spring Valley. She had been using a copy of a copy of her original Sunfire key for so long that nobody in the house remembered what the first one looked like. The copy had worn just enough that it would start the car maybe seven times out of ten, and on that particular morning it landed on the wrong three.

She was sitting in her driveway, key turning freely but nothing catching right, not stranded across town at least, but still stuck before work.

I pulled up, decoded the lock, and cut a fresh key to the actual specification of the cylinder rather than to the worn-down copy she had been living with. Tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Caught first time, every time.

She mentioned she had called the dealer first out of habit. They told her to bring it in, which meant arranging a ride, leaving the car, and waiting for a callback. She saved a good chunk just by not going that route, and she was backing out of the driveway before she would have even gotten a call back from the service desk.
