A woman over in San Luis Rey called me about her 2000 Sunfire. The remote had been getting flaky for a few weeks, short range, sometimes nothing at all, and then one morning it just stopped responding. She had been walking around to the passenger side to use the manual lock because the driver door lock cylinder was stiff from years of not being used. That was her whole routine now.
She figured she needed a whole new fob and braced herself for what that was going to cost her.
I pulled up to her place in Oceanside with the right fob already in the bag. Popped her old one open first just to check. The contacts were corroded, which I see constantly on cars this age. Cleaned them, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and tested it. Still weak. The transmitter board itself had given up, which happens on a 24-year-old fob.
Programmed the new remote on site. These take a specific onboard sequence to register, no OBD port needed on a car this age, just the right steps in the right order. Tested every button, including the trunk release. Then I worked some lubricant into that driver door lock cylinder while I was there because it took nothing and she mentioned it.
She said she had called the dealer first. They told her two days out and a number that made her laugh a little before she hung up. She paid a fraction of that, standing in her own driveway, and drove to work twenty minutes later.
