2004 Pontiac Sunfire
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long does programming take once you arrive?

For a standard add-a-remote on the 2004 Sunfire, the programming sequence runs fast, usually five to fifteen minutes at the car. All-keys-lost takes longer because the vehicle security system needs to be reset before it will accept new fobs, but you are still well under an hour from the time I pull up to the time you have a tested, working remote in your hand.

Q: Can you get me a working fob faster than the dealer can?

Not even close. The dealer route means scheduling an appointment, confirming the fob is in stock or waiting for it to ship, and then bringing the car in. That whole process can stretch across several days. I carry fob inventory and handle everything in a single visit, same day you call, at a fraction of what the dealer route ends up costing once you add the part markup and labor rate.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Can I program it myself, or do I need someone with a tool?

On the 2004 Sunfire, there is an onboard remote programming sequence that does not require a scan tool, so a fob you sourced yourself can potentially be paired. The catch is you need a working ignition key to enter the sequence, and you need to run through it correctly and completely. If you exit the sequence early or make a timing error, the vehicle may not accept the fob and you have to start over.

Q: My fob works on the doors but the trunk release button stopped responding. Is the fob failing?

Probably not the fob itself. On these, the trunk release circuit can fail independently of the door lock functions. First check the obvious: the trunk release fuse. There is a fuse in the underhood block that covers the trunk release separately from the door locks on some of these GM setups.

2004 Pontiac Sunfire Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy parked off Campo Road, right in the Casa de Oro area of La Mesa. He had both his key and his fob, but the fob had gone completely dead. Not intermittent, not weak range. Nothing. He had already tried a new CR2032 from a gas station and it still did nothing.

When I got there, I popped the fob open on the hood. The battery he installed was seated flat and looked correct, but one of the contact tabs had a slight inward bend, probably from whoever opened it before him prying at the wrong spot. The new cell was not making a solid connection. I straightened the tab, reseated the battery, and tested it right there. Locks, trunk release, panic. All working.

He looked at it for a second and said he had been driving around manually unlocking for two weeks.

We ran the full check anyway: tested every button, walked to the edge of the parking lot to confirm range, checked that the trunk popped clean. The whole thing took about twelve minutes. He had a dealer appointment booked for later in the week. He canceled it from the parking lot while I was still packing up.

Pontiac Sunfire Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a replacement fob after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call us. Dealer service departments are typically closed by early evening and run limited Saturday hours at best. If you realize Friday night that the fob is gone or dead, you are looking at Monday before they can even talk to you, and then probably another day or two to order the part if it is not sitting on their shelf. We work evenings and weekends because that is exactly when people discover a key problem.
