2003 Pontiac Sunfire Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from someone over in Eucalyptus Hills, Lakeside side. She was in the driveway, late morning, holding a fob that had stopped locking the doors and a key she wasn't even sure still started the car. Turned out both things had gone wrong at once, which happens more than people expect on a vehicle this age.
The fob battery was dead. That was the easy part. Popped in a fresh CR2032, and the remote buttons came right back on their own because the fob was already paired to the car. She hadn't lost programming, just power.
The key was a different story. It would turn in the ignition and the car would crank, but it stalled out almost immediately. Classic sign that the immobilizer wasn't recognizing the chip. The key blank she had was a copy someone made at a hardware store, and it was cut fine but never had the transponder enrolled. The car was doing exactly what it was supposed to do, which was not run on an unrecognized key.
I cut a proper replacement blade on the portable machine and ran the chip enrollment through the OBD port. First start after that, the engine caught and held. She watched it idle for a few seconds like she was waiting for it to change its mind.
The whole thing took under 40 minutes in her driveway. She mentioned the dealer wanted her to tow it in and leave it. That wasn't going to work for her schedule, which is exactly why I was there instead.
