A guy in Berry Park called me on a Tuesday morning. His Sunfire fob had been getting flaky for a week, and that morning the door would not pop from the lot. He walked up to the car manually, unlocked it, drove to work, called me from the parking lot.

Swapped the battery on the hood of my van while he watched. Buttons still had maybe six feet of range, which on a healthy fob should be closer to thirty feet in a clear lot. He mentioned he had tried a new battery himself a few days back. That told me the contact plate inside was the issue, not the cell. The fob had been pried open the wrong way at some point and the battery contacts were slightly sprung, not making clean connection.

Reseated the contacts, new CR2032 properly installed, tested range across the lot. Back to normal. Then I walked the buttons, all four, because on these fobs the panic button tends to be the first one to wear its pad out and I wanted him to know where he stood.

He asked if he should just get a new fob as a backup while I was there. I had the right fob in stock, so we did the programming on the spot. The Sunfire uses an onboard programming sequence, no dealer computer needed for adding remotes when you have a working key present. Ten minutes, both fobs confirmed, done in the parking lot.

He had called the dealer the week before out of habit. They quoted him a wait and a tow. He did not need either.
