The gym parking lot off Palomar Airport Road near Bressi Ranch is quiet at 4:45 in the morning. Not a lot of people around to help, and the one person who needed help was standing under a parking lot light holding two pieces of what used to be his only key to his 2013 Ram 2500.
He had bought the truck used. One key came with it. He always meant to get a spare cut, the way everyone always means to. The blade pivot had been cracking slowly, and that morning it finished the job. The blade snapped off inside the ignition cylinder. The key pod was in his hand. The blade was not going anywhere on its own.

I extracted the broken blade and inspected the cylinder. No damage worth noting. The fob body was cracked but the circuit board inside was intact. I was able to work from that existing hardware, cut a new blade, transfer what I needed into a fresh housing, and program it to the truck at the OBD port. The whole job was done before his 5am class started. He made it. I watched him jog across the lot.
He called later that same week to add a spare. That is usually how it goes. The first replacement teaches the lesson that the first key was supposed to teach three years earlier.
