2014 Ram 2500
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: Is a mobile locksmith actually cheaper than going to the Ram dealer for a key?

On these HD trucks, consistently yes. Ram dealers itemize the job: fob part, blade cut, programming labor, and sometimes a gateway or diagnostic fee to access the immobilizer. By the time those line items stack up, owners are looking at a significant total - and that assumes the truck can be driven or towed in during dealer hours. We come to you, charge one price for the whole job, and do it the same day.

Q: Does your price include cutting and programming, or are those separate charges?

One price, everything in it. The key blank, cutting the blade to your truck, programming the transponder side so the immobilizer accepts it, syncing all the remote buttons, and a full function test before I leave. Nothing gets added at the end.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2014 Ram 2500. Can I program it myself?

Not on this truck. The 2014 Ram 2500 remote head key does not have an onboard self-programming sequence the way some older vehicles do. Both the remote functions and the transponder chip have to be registered through the OBD port using professional diagnostic equipment. There is no ignition-turn trick, no button sequence, no workaround.

Q: My 2014 Ram 2500 starts fine but the remote buttons stopped working. Is the fob dead?

Start with the CR2032. A weak battery in these fobs kills the radio signal well before it affects the transponder side, which is why the truck still starts but the lock and unlock buttons do nothing. Swap the battery, make sure it seats flat against the contacts, and retest.

2014 Ram 2500 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Peutz Valley, just east of Alpine, I got a call from a family whose 2014 Ram 2500 was sitting cold at a campsite. They had come out for the weekend with one fob between them. Dad walked the trail back three times looking for it. Gone.

Mom had already called the dealer. The dealer said bring it in Monday, and mentioned a tow since there was no way to start it. I told them I could be there that afternoon.

When I pulled up, the truck was parked on a dirt lot next to their gear. No shade. Just a big HD Ram sitting there going nowhere.

I decoded the door lock mechanically, cut a new blade to match, and got them into the cab. Then I connected through the OBD port, pulled the information the immobilizer needed to accept a new key, and ran the all-keys-lost sequence. The old fob got wiped out of the system in the process - if it ever turned up, it would not start the truck.

The new remote head key went in, the engine turned over, and I walked every button on the fob before I packed up. Lock, unlock, the rear window drop, all of it. The truck started in the same dirt spot it had been sitting in all afternoon.

They drove out that evening. The dealer comparison barely came up. They just wanted to get back on the road, and that is what happened.

Ram 2500 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How much does a 2014 Ram 2500 key replacement cost?▼

Call us for current pricing. What I can tell you is it covers everything in one number: the key itself, cutting the blade to your truck, programming both the immobilizer and the remote functions, and mobile service to wherever you are in or around Alpine. The dealer breaks that same job into separate line items - the fob part, a cutting charge, programming labor, and sometimes a diagnostic access fee on top.
