My fob works fine up close but the range has gotten really short. What's going on?

Nine times out of ten on these trucks: the CR2032 is low. Short range before a full failure is one of the first signs the battery is fading. Swap it before anything else.

If a fresh CR2032 doesn't bring the range back, the next suspect is the fob's internal antenna or the RF receiver on the truck side. These fobs take some abuse -- they ride in pockets, get dropped on job sites, bounce around in a center console. A small crack in the fob housing near the antenna area can kill range even with a good battery. If the battery swap doesn't fix it, give me a call. I can test the fob and the truck's receiver on-site and tell you whether it's the fob, the truck, or both.

Can I program a second fob myself, or do I need a tech with equipment?

You need equipment. There is no onboard self-programming sequence for the 2021 Ram 2500 smart fob -- no ignition cycling trick, no button combination. Adding a key to this truck's immobilizer requires professional diagnostic tools connected to the OBD port.
