2016 Ram 2500 Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call out to Bancroft in Spring Valley on a Tuesday afternoon. Guy had a 2016 Ram 2500, work truck, full bed, the kind that lives on a job site six days a week.
His key turned in the ignition, the engine fired, and then it immediately died. Every time. He had already tried it a dozen times before calling me. His assumption was that the key was bad. He had already ordered a replacement online and was waiting for it to arrive.
I asked him one question before I drove over: does the security light stay on after that stall? He said yes. That told me most of what I needed to know.
The replacement key he ordered online would have been useless without programming. A replacement remote head key for this truck has to be enrolled into the vehicle's immobilizer. It does not matter how well the blade is cut or how new the battery is. An unprogrammed key will do the exact same thing his current key was doing, turn and fire and immediately die, because the immobilizer is doing its job. The engine sees ignition, then sees no authorized key signal, and shuts down.
When I got there I programmed his existing key first, just to confirm it was actually unprogrammed rather than damaged. Fired right up and stayed running. His original key had somehow lost its pairing, which does happen, usually after a dead battery in the truck or some other power interruption.
He canceled the online order while I was still parked at the curb. Saved him the wait and the cost of a key he did not need. I was out of Bancroft in under an hour.
