2020 Ram 2500 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Alpine, near the Viejas Area, I got a call from a fleet manager who runs a small crew of work trucks.
He had a 2020 Ram 2500 where the fob was doing something specific and annoying: the driver would walk up to the truck, nothing would happen on the door handle, and the dash would throw a key-not-detected warning. Then they would hold the fob right against the start button and it would fire up fine. Classic weak-battery behavior, but they had already swapped the CR2032.
When I got there, the fob battery was fine. What was not fine was the battery contact inside the fob housing. It had a slight compression issue, common on fobs that live in a pocket with keys and tools all day. The contact was there, but intermittent under vibration. Five minutes with the fob open on the hood and it was sorted.
But then we had a second truck. That one needed a full replacement fob because the housing had cracked and the internal board was damaged from what looked like a close encounter with a tailgate. That one needed programming equipment, which I had with me.
The fleet manager had already called the dealer before he called me. He mentioned the number they gave him for the replacement and just shook his head. His words were something like, "I figured there had to be another way." Mobile, on site, at his yard, no tow, no rental, no two-day wait. That is the other way.
