2008 Scion XD
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: What exactly is a remote head key and how is it different from a regular key?

A remote head key looks like a standard key but the head is larger because it houses two separate systems. There's a transponder chip embedded in the head that communicates with the immobilizer every time you turn the ignition. Without a valid signal from that chip, the car will crank and immediately shut off, no matter how good the blade cut is. The second system is the RF transmitter, which is the part that locks and unlocks the doors remotely.

Q: What kind of equipment does a mobile locksmith actually need to program one of these?

For the 2008 XD you need a programmer that reaches Toyota's immobilizer through the OBD port and handles transponder enrollment and remote pairing in one session. I carry several platforms that cover it, including all-keys-lost recovery, the harder job with no working key to read from. You also need proper cutting equipment, since a blade off by a few thousandths will bind and wear the ignition cylinder. Not a one-tool job, especially at 7:30am in a parking lot.

Q: I still have one working key. Does that change how the job goes?

Yes, it makes it faster and cleaner. When there's at least one valid key present, the programmer can read the existing immobilizer data and add the new key into the system without a full reset. All-keys-lost is a longer process because the system has to be handled differently when there's nothing to read from. If you've got a working key, keep it somewhere safe until after the appointment.

Q: The battery in my XD key fob died. Will replacing it fix the remote, or does it need to be reprogrammed?

Swapping the battery is always the first move. The 2008 XD remote head takes a CR2016, which is a thin coin cell. Pop the old one out, seat the new one correctly with the positive side facing the right direction, and test all three buttons. Here's the thing most people don't know: on these Toyota-based systems, the remote side can sometimes lose its pairing after power is interrupted, even from a dead battery.

2008 Scion XD Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A temp worker called me at 7:30 in the morning.

She was sitting in a parking lot off the main drag in Fairbanks Ranch, waiting on an assignment from a staffing office nearby, and her XD remote head key had cracked apart on her way in. The blade was rotating loose inside the shell and she couldn't get enough grip on it to turn the ignition. She had until 8:30 to reach the job site or she was losing the placement.

I was in her lot in under 20 minutes.

The shell had broken at the pivot point, which is the common failure on this body style of key. The blade itself was still good, so I decoded it and confirmed the cut. Then I built a new remote head, transferred what I needed, and registered both the transponder and the remote through the OBD port. Three-button unit, same as the factory FCC ID on her original fob.

Hands-on time was about 20 minutes. She watched me work from the driver seat, engine off, and when I handed it over she turned the key, engine started clean, and she tested all three buttons herself before I closed my bag.

She made her 8:30. The dealer, if she'd even been able to get a service appointment that morning, would have meant a tow, a wait, and a missed shift she couldn't afford. None of that happened.

Scion XD Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How many buttons does the 2008 Scion XD remote head key have?▼

Three buttons. On the factory remote head for this year, you get lock, unlock, and panic. During every programming appointment I run each button individually and confirm the vehicle responds before I call the job done. A key that starts the car but has a dead panic button isn't a finished job.
