Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in San Diego

Q: How long will the replacement key last?

The programming itself doesn't wear out. Once the key is recognized by the immobilizer, that relationship is stable. What fails over time is physical: worn button pads, a cracked shell, or a drained CR2016. Battery life on these depends on how often you use the remote, but a couple of years is typical. If the remote range starts shrinking before the buttons feel bad, battery is the first thing to check.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call us. That's what the warranty is for. But in practice, when a key that was working fine suddenly stops, the vehicle is usually the cause, not the key. A weak or failing car battery will drop enough voltage that the immobilizer behaves strangely even with a good key. Dead key battery is the other common one. We diagnose the actual problem rather than just handing you another key and hoping.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2010 xD. Is that a harder job?

Yes, but it's not a dealership-only situation. All-keys-lost on this generation requires working through the immobilizer to register new keys from scratch without a reference key to read from. It takes longer than an add-a-key job and requires a different process, but it's a standard call for a qualified mobile locksmith with the right equipment.

Q: My xD starts fine but the remote lock and unlock stopped working. Does the whole key need to be replaced?

Not necessarily. The transponder side and the remote side of a remote head key are two separate systems. If the car starts, the transponder is talking to the immobilizer just fine. A remote that stopped working is often just a dead CR2016, a slightly dislodged battery contact, or worn button contacts on the circuit board. Try the battery first. If a fresh CR2016 doesn't bring it back, the remote circuitry inside the shell may have failed.

2010 Scion XD Remote Head Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a woman in Otay Mesa West, over near the skate park. She had one working key left and wanted a spare cut before she ended up in the all-keys-lost situation her neighbor had just dealt with. Smart thinking.

She texted me the VIN before I left my van. That matters more than people realize. With that number I already knew the correct key blank, the transponder configuration, and the remote layout for her xD. I had everything staged and ready before I pulled up.

When I got there she had her ID and registration out. One working key sitting on the hood. She said she'd been putting this off for two years.

Because she had a working key, the job was about reading the existing transponder data and getting the new key recognized by the immobilizer. No lock decoding needed, no EEPROM work, no timed resets. I tested the remote functions and the ignition start on the new key before I even put my tools away. Start to finish, including the paperwork, we were done in well under twenty minutes.

She said the dealer had quoted her a multi-day wait just to get the key ordered, then another appointment to cut and program it. She paid a fraction of that and never left her block.

Scion XD Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys?▼

We use blanks that are spec-matched to your vehicle. The factory FCC ID on the fob and the transponder chip inside have to match what the immobilizer on your xD expects, or the car simply won't start. We verify compatibility before the job, not after. Bringing your own blank you bought online is fine, but we'll check it against your vehicle first because not every blank sold as a fit for this model actually programs cleanly.
