2023 Toyota Crown Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
I got a call from a woman in Downtown El Cajon who had been using her Crown for about a week and a half before the problems started. Every morning, fine. Every evening, the push-to-start would sit there and do nothing. No error she could read clearly, just the car not responding. She had already been told by another locksmith that the job was done and done correctly.
I met her near the laundromat she had been waiting at. She was past frustrated and into that quiet mode where people just want it fixed and do not want to hear theories.
I tested the fob first. Proximity detection was inconsistent, and when I pulled the fob apart to inspect, the CR2450 was reading low. That alone could cause intermittent start failures on this system. But a weak battery does not fully explain a key that registers fine for ten days and then starts dropping out. I connected my diagnostic equipment and checked how the key was enrolled against the vehicle's immobilizer. The registration had gone through, but the transponder pairing was not sitting right. The other locksmith had used a fob that was not a clean match for the Crown's current security generation. Some of these mismatched fobs pass the initial registration handshake because the process does not reject them immediately. The deeper verification the system runs over several drive cycles is where they fall apart.
I programmed a properly matched replacement fob with a fresh CR2450 seated correctly, verified every button function, and walked her through using the backup blade inside the fob, which she had not known was there.
She did not say much. She just did the door lock test herself twice, started the car, and nodded. The dealer quote she had gotten earlier was more than she wanted to spend for a car she bought three months ago. She paid a fraction of that and drove away.
That is the whole job. Getting it right once.
