I was parked on a side street in Old Escondido, one of those older residential blocks where the trees have grown over the sidewalk and there is barely room to open the van doors wide. The job was a spare key for a 2009 Volkswagen EOS. The owner had done her homework before calling.

She watched the whole thing from about four feet away. When it was done she said she wanted to see the receipt before I packed up. I handed it to her with the license number printed on it. That is how it should work every time.
The dealer had given her a number that made her wince. She paid a fraction of that, in her own neighborhood, without moving the car.
