The torque from normal key turns will work the blade loose again within days. A proper shell swap with a solid pivot pin is the only version that holds.

The four buttons on the fob handle remote lock, unlock, trunk release, and a secondary function, all transmitted on the fob's radio frequency.

Programming syncs the transponder chip to your specific vehicle's immobilizer using the vehicle's stored security PIN. A blank key cut to the right profile will turn the ignition freely but the car will not run without that pairing. That's why a hardware store copy doesn't work. The blade is easy. The chip registration is what requires the right equipment and the PIN retrieval step.

My Volkswagen is showing a key warning and won't start. What's going on?

If a fresh battery doesn't resolve it and the car still won't run, the key needs to be diagnosed and either reprogrammed or replaced. I can do both on site in Eucalyptus Hills.

I bought a replacement fob online. Can you just program it to my EOS?

Sometimes, with a condition. The fob needs to be the correct unit for a 2011 EOS. If the factory FCC ID on the fob matches what your car takes and it's a properly sourced blank, programming it through OBD with the vehicle PIN is a standard job.

Where it gets complicated: some aftermarket fobs sold online are clones with inconsistent build quality. The blade cuts fine, the buttons feel right, but the transponder chip inside doesn't meet the spec the immobilizer expects. The car rejects it and the owner assumes the programming failed. It didn't. The fob itself is the problem.

My EOS locks and unlocks fine with the fob but the engine won't start. Are those two problems or one?

That specific symptom, remote works but no start, points directly at the transponder side of the key rather than the fob battery or the remote receiver. It's a useful distinction because it narrows down exactly what needs to be addressed.
