She called from the Spring Valley border side of Lemon Grove and led with the thing people hate saying: she'd already paid someone else and it still didn't work.
Another locksmith had tried to program a key to her 2010 VW EOS, couldn't finish it, and left. Charged her for the attempt, told her to go to the dealer, and walked off. Now the car wouldn't accept any key, including the one it was driving on before any of this started.
She was upfront about being nervous. Didn't want to pay again and still end up at the dealer.
I drove out and plugged into the OBD port first. The immobilizer module had fault codes sitting in it from the incomplete session, and it was stuck in a state where it wouldn't accept a new adaptation. That's actually a known failure mode when a procedure gets abandoned halfway. The module doesn't reset itself. It just sits there, confused.
I cleared the faults, verified the module was in a clean state, then ran the full key-learning sequence from scratch the way it's supposed to go. Her remote flip key got registered completely. I had her crank it, drive it a few feet in the parking area, cycle the ignition twice more. Confirmed clean each time.
She watched the confirmation on my screen. She didn't say much, just nodded like she'd been holding her breath the whole time and finally let it out.
The dealer had already quoted her a significant amount to fix what the other guy broke. She paid way less than that. I didn't add a surcharge for the cleanup work because that's just part of doing the job right the first time, even when it isn't technically your first time on the car.
