So if the fob electronics stop working entirely, you can still flip out the blade and unlock the door the old-fashioned way. What many EOS owners do not realize is that the ignition also accepts the blade, so you can turn the car on even without a working transponder signal, though the immobilizer will decide what happens next. The blade access is there. Keep the pivot clean and lightly lubricated so it does not seize up.

My 2013 EOS starts fine but the remote lock and unlock buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?

If a new battery does not fix it, the next thing to check is whether the fob needs to be re-paired to the car's receiver. This can happen after a battery swap if the fob loses sync. On some VW setups this re-pairs automatically on the next use. On others it does not. If the buttons are still dead after a confirmed good battery, that is a job for someone with diagnostic equipment to re-establish communication between the fob and the body control module. It is not always a dead key. Sometimes it is just a lost sync.

The flip key blade on my EOS is loose and wobbly. Is that a locksmith job or a hardware fix?

It is a mechanical wear issue, not a programming problem. The pivot pin that holds the blade wears down over years of flipping, especially if the key lives in a pocket with other metal. A loose blade can eventually cause the key to wobble in the ignition cylinder, which creates its own set of problems. The fix is a new key housing with a fresh pivot, and the internals get transferred over. If the transponder chip is intact, we move it into the new shell and the programming carries over. No re-programming needed in that case, just a hardware swap.
