Out in Harbison Canyon, I got a call from someone who had been driving on a cracked, taped-together flip key for about four months. The blade was intact but the fob housing was split at the hinge, and one day the remote just stopped responding entirely. No lock, no unlock, nothing. The car still started, but she was manually unlocking every time.

I checked the CR2032 first. It was the original battery, and testing it showed it was nearly flat. That alone can kill remote range before anything else fails. But there was also corrosion on one of the battery contacts inside the broken housing, which explained why a partial battery was making things worse than they should have been.
Fresh battery, cleaned contacts, new housing, key programmed and tested. Lock, unlock, all five buttons working from across the driveway. The car saw the transponder the first try.
She asked me how long the dealer would have taken. I told her what I knew. She just nodded slowly, the way people do when they've already moved past being annoyed about it.
