2004 Volvo S80 Remote Flip Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
When a 2004 Volvo S80 key is programmed wrong, Volvo's CEM makes it obvious fast. The engine cranks but the immobilizer cuts fuel. The push-to-start works for a couple of days then throws "remote not recognized." A close-but-wrong chip passes the first handshake and fails the second.
A customer at the cobbler shop in Alpine had a key from another locksmith that stopped working after five days. His S80 would start in the morning but by evening the system was intermittently rejecting the fob. He thought the CEM was failing, but it wasn't.
The locksmith had used an incorrect transponder type. Volvo's immobilizer is specific about the chip variant for each platform generation. I used my VVDI2 to read the bad key's chip and confirmed the mismatch. Then I programmed a new fob with the correct chip matched to his CEM. His key, FCC ID LQNP2T-APU, was a 5-button smart fob with a weak CR2032 making the detection issue worse on top of the bad chip. I replaced both.
The replacement has been working for months. His cost was $264. Dealer would have charged $495. The difference between a Volvo key that works and one that dies after five days is the chip type inside the fob.
