She had just finished at the allergist with her daughter and walked out to the parking lot in Bancroft, Spring Valley, around 5:30 in the evening. The medical building was shutting down. Her S80 sat there and did nothing.
No response from the fob. Push-button start unresponsive. She tried holding the fob closer to the start button, which is the instinct everyone has. Still nothing.

I got there, got the door open with the emergency blade tucked inside the fob, and connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD port. The key itself was reading as present but the signal was inconsistent. When I opened the fob casing, I found what I was looking for: the CR2450 had developed a light layer of corrosion on one of the battery contacts inside the housing, just enough to interrupt the signal under load. The battery still showed voltage on a meter, which is exactly why these get misread as something bigger.
I replaced the fob, enrolled it properly, confirmed the old fob was still in the system alongside it, and walked every function: door lock, unlock, start, the trunk release. Everything worked before I put my tools away.
From her call to engine running was under an hour. She got home for dinner. The dealer would have been a wait until morning and a bill she did not want to see. That part was an afterthought. The part that mattered was getting her out of a closed parking lot with her kid.
