I got a call from a Euro specialist shop out in Santee, over near Fanita Ranch. A customer had brought his S80 in for mechanical work, and while it was there, a key was needed. The shop brought in another locksmith to handle it. That locksmith tried to register a new fob through the OBD port, got an error mid-process, and left. The car would not start. The CEM was sitting in a fault state and rejecting everything.

The shop called me because they were out of options short of a flatbed to the dealer.

When I got there, the car was exactly as described. The module was not reading new key attempts cleanly. Whatever the first attempt had done, it left the authorization data in a corrupted state that the car could not reconcile on its own.

I pulled the CEM, worked it on the bench, read the secured data directly, cleared the corruption, and wrote it back clean. Then I generated a fresh key registration from the module dump and tested it in the car. The CEM came back online and accepted the new fob on the first attempt. No fault codes left behind.

I walked the shop through what had happened and what the warning signs look like if they ever see a locksmith start down that road again. The car was drivable that afternoon.

The dealer alternative would have been a flatbed, a diagnostic fee, likely a week on their schedule, and a real possibility they would have called for a CEM replacement before doing any module-level recovery work. The shop owner said the difference in time alone was worth it.
