I got a call from a woman in Spring Valley Village on a Tuesday afternoon. She was parked outside her kid's school and the fob had just gone completely dead. No lock, no unlock, and when she got in and tried to start it, the engine turned over and died. Classic transponder no-start on the 2006 S80.
She had already called the Volvo dealer. Closest one was about 40 minutes from Spring Valley. They told her they could get her in the following week, and she would need to tow the car there first.

When I pulled up, I popped the fob open first thing. The CR2032 was reading low, borderline dead. I swapped it and tested the remote buttons right away. Lock and unlock came back. Good sign.
But the car still stalled on start. That confirmed the transponder registration had dropped, which can happen when the fob battery fully drains on these. The transponder side needs a working battery to hold its link with the Central Electronic Module, and once it loses that, you have to re-enroll it.
I connected my programmer to the OBD port, pulled up the S80, and ran the add-a-key sequence to re-register the fob. The whole thing took about 25 minutes on-site. I cycled the ignition twice to confirm a clean start, then tested every button on the 5-button fob while she watched.
She made it to after-care pickup with time to spare. The dealer wait would have been a week, a tow bill, and a much larger invoice. This was one phone call and one visit.
