Over in Lomas Santa Fe, a guy called me on a Tuesday afternoon with a problem that sounded simple until it wasn't.
He had walked out of a shop on Lomas Santa Fe Drive, hit the button on his 2013 Volvo S80 fob, and nothing happened. No lock, no unlock, no response at all. He tried again standing right next to the door. Still nothing. He used the mechanical insert key to get in, which worked fine, but the car threw a key-not-detected warning on the dash the moment he sat down. He was convinced the fob was dead.
I asked him when he last changed the battery. He paused. Never, he said. The car was his for three years and the thought hadn't come up.
I pulled in, popped the fob open, and the CR2450 inside was reading low on my meter. Swapped it out. That alone got the remote functions working again. But the dash warning was still there, and the start behavior was still a little sluggish -- the car would hesitate before acknowledging the key was present.
That part pointed somewhere else. The fob was talking to the car now, but the system wasn't fully happy. I connected my diagnostic equipment and found that the fob had partially lost its pairing -- probably from operating on a weak battery for long enough that communication between the fob and the body electronics module had degraded. Ran the registration process through the OBD port, confirmed the key was properly enrolled, and cleared the warning.
After that I walked every function: lock, unlock, tested the start, made sure the dash stayed clean through a full key cycle. Everything came back solid.
He asked if he should have just gone to the dealer. I told him the dealer would have had him drop the car and wait. He was driving home in under an hour from when I arrived. The dealer comparison didn't really need to go further than that.
