I was already working in Vista on a Saturday evening when a second call came in from Shadowridge. Couple had walked out of a wine bar, fob in hand, and the S80 was sitting there completely ignoring them. No response on the doors. Nothing. They tried the fob a dozen times in the parking lot before one of them thought to search for a mobile locksmith.
I told them I was about 14 minutes out. They sounded like they were already mentally preparing to leave the car there until Monday.
When I pulled up, I had the right fob components and a fresh CR2450 already out of the drawer before I even walked over. I resynced the fob using my diagnostic equipment, walked both doors, tested every button, and confirmed the car recognized the key inside the cabin. First press, the car started. The woman looked at her husband like she had been vindicated about something, though I never found out what.
They drove home that night. The dealer conversation never really came up because the job was done before they had time to think about it. That is usually how it goes when the parts are already in the van.
