I was already near the Border Area in San Ysidro when the call came in. A woman standing in a parking lot off the main commercial strip, her 2015 S80 sitting there with nothing happening. She had tried the fob, tried the backup slot, tried walking away and back. The dash was giving her a key-not-detected warning and the car was not cooperating.
She was calm about it, which made the conversation easy. She mentioned the fob had been acting up for a couple of weeks, range getting shorter, sometimes taking two or three presses to lock the doors. She had assumed it would work itself out. It did not.
I pulled in next to her, got out the diagnostic equipment, and started where you always start: the battery. CR2450 in this fob is a less common cell and the one inside looked original to the car, which would make it a decade old. Swapped it out, reset the connection, tested range and response. Better, but not clean. The fob was also failing to reliably communicate during the start sequence, which pointed to the key needing to be re-enrolled rather than just refreshed.
Connected through the OBD port, ran the enrollment procedure, verified all functions: lock, unlock, remote functions, and the start sequence. Tested it twice before I packed up. Everything working.
The whole job, from the time I pulled in, was under 45 minutes. She mentioned she had called the dealer earlier that morning and they had told her to tow it in and plan for a wait. She did not have to do any of that.
