2013 Volvo Xc60 Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy in Bressi Ranch picked up a 2013 XC60 through an estate sale, which is a great way to get a well-kept car and a stressful way to start the ownership experience. The previous owners handed him a single key and told him the rest was his problem.
He was not naive about it. He called the Volvo dealer first, got a quote, and then called me to ask if that number was real. It was real. Volvo dealer pricing on smart key work reflects the tools, the software subscription, and the square footage they are sitting in.
I met him in Carlsbad and pulled up to his driveway with the one working fob in hand. Add-a-key on these, when you have a working key to read from, is the version of this job you want. The diagnostic equipment communicates with both the keyless vehicle module and the central electronics module, reads the existing security credentials, and writes a new key into the system without disturbing anything. I cut the replacement blade to match, verified both keys started the car, walked the lock and unlock functions on both fobs, and confirmed the passive entry was responding at the door handles.
The whole visit ran under an hour. He saved a good chunk compared to the dealer quote, and more importantly he now has a spare. I told him straight: if he ever loses both of these, the job gets considerably harder and more expensive. He put the backup in his house the same afternoon.
