His fob also had a weak CR1616 battery contributing to the intermittent detection issues. I swapped that too so he wasn't chasing two problems at once.
The replacement I made has been working for months and cost him 185. Dealer would have charged 395. The difference between a key that works and a key that works for a week is the chip inside it.
