My key broke in the ignition. Can you get it out?

Yes. Broken key extraction is a standard job for a mobile automotive locksmith. We use specialized tools to remove the broken piece without damaging your Land Rover's ignition or lock cylinder. Once it is out, we can cut a new key from the extracted piece or from your vehicle's lock data and program it on the spot. Land Rover flip keys and switchblade keys are known for cracking at the pivot mechanism. One owner described their key body snapping and the blade falling out. We can replace the shell or cut a completely new key on site.

What is a smart key?

A smart key is the type of key your 2018 Land Rover Range Rover uses. It combines a physical emergency blade with an electronic smart key chip and 5 buttons for remote functions. The chip communicates with your Land Rover's KVM and immobilizer to authorize the engine to start. If the blade breaks but the electronics are still intact, we can often move the circuit board into a new key shell and save you the cost of a full replacement. If both are damaged, we cut and program a completely new key on site.

My Land Rover says key not detected. What do I do?

Start with the basics. Replace the fob battery, since a dead battery is the most common cause of "smart key not detected" on Land Rovers. If you have a smart key, look for three lines or notches on the left side of the steering column or center console. Hold the fob directly against that spot and press the brake to start the car. That uses the backup transponder antenna and works even when the battery is dead. One 2018 Range Rover Sport owner had this issue four times and the dealer could not fix it even after ordering a $700 replacement key. If a fresh battery and the backup method do not work, call us for a diagnosis.

The FCC ID is KOBJXF18A, KOBJTF10A. This identifier on the back of your fob tells us exactly which replacement key your vehicle needs. If your key is broken or damaged and you can still read the FCC ID on the old fob, give it to us when you call. It speeds up the process and guarantees we bring the exact right key to your location. If the fob is too damaged to read, we can identify it from your vehicle's year, make, and model.

Is all-keys-lost more expensive than a regular replacement?

Yes, significantly so on Land Rovers. When you still have one working key, adding a spare is straightforward. When all keys are lost, JLR security systems often require the KVM or security module to be reset or replaced, which is a much more involved process. A 2012 LR4 owner was quoted $2,500 for all-keys-lost at the dealer because the entire security module had to be replaced. A New Defender owner was warned of $3,000 to $5,000 if both keys were lost. With us the gap is smaller, but AKL still costs more because of the extra work. That is why we always tell Land Rover owners: get a spare made while you still have a working key.
