Got a call from a guy near the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. His 2017 Range Rover was sitting in the lot, dash reading "Key Not Detected," doors not responding to the fob at all. He had already swapped the CR2032 twice, bought two different brands thinking the first was a dud.
I pulled up, opened the KOBJTF10A fob on the hood. Both batteries he tried were fine. The problem was the contact spring on the negative side had gotten pressed flat, probably from someone popping the old battery out with a screwdriver tip instead of sliding it. The fob shell on these L405 keys is tight, and that little spring takes abuse every battery swap.
Bent the contact back to shape, cleaned both terminals, seated a fresh CR2032 correctly. Then I walked the whole system. Passive entry on all four doors and the tailgate. Lock button on the door handles. Start/stop with the fob in my pocket, then on the dash, then in the center console bin. Checked the configurable locking settings through the dash menu to make sure his preferences were still saved.
He stood there watching me test the tailgate gesture sensor, arms crossed, like he was waiting for the car to act up again. It did not.
No new key needed. Just the right fix, right there in the parking lot, for a fraction of what the dealer would have quoted to start diagnosing.
