I got a call from someone parked near the Funk Zone in Santa Barbara, one of those afternoons when the wine tasting crowd and the beach crowd are all competing for the same two blocks of street parking. She had a 2012 Range Rover and a fob that had just stopped being recognized. The dash was showing a key-not-detected warning, the push-button start was dead, and she had already done the thing you read about online - holding the fob up to the start button. Got nothing.
When I pulled up, first thing I checked was the CR2032. She said she had swapped it two weeks earlier. Battery voltage tested fine. That ruled out the obvious one fast.
The real issue turned out to be key registration. The fob had dropped its pairing, which does happen on these trucks. I see it after a dead 12-volt battery, after someone disconnects the battery without going through a proper wake-up sequence, or sometimes just out of nowhere. The 12-volt under the hood had apparently gone low and been jump-started without much thought a few days before. That was the culprit.
I connected through the OBD port with the right equipment for this platform, pulled up the key module, and ran the registration process. Her original fob, same physical key she had been using for years, came back online. All five buttons working, start button responding, door handles reading the fob on approach. Job done in the shade, right on the street.
She mentioned the dealer had quoted her multiple business days just to look at it. The whole thing took about 35 minutes from the time I parked behind her.
