A call came in from Concha Loma in Carpinteria. The owner had a 2007 Range Rover and had already been to the dealer. They told her the key needed to be replaced and gave her a number that made her sit in the parking lot for a minute before she drove home and started searching for other options.
When she called me, she was half-expecting the same answer. She asked twice if I was sure I could handle a Land Rover. I told her to have the car unlocked and running when I arrived, so she could see the key still turned the ignition. She did.
I pulled up, looked at the fob, and asked when she last changed the battery. She said the dealer had done it. I opened the shell anyway. The CR2032 was seated crooked, barely making contact on one side. The brass contact pad had a thin film of oxidation that looked like nothing until you tilted it in the light.
New battery, cleaned contacts, shell back together. Walked the locks. Walked the remote. Stood there and watched it work ten times in a row before I said anything.
She did not need a new key. She needed five minutes and the right person looking at the right thing. The dealer visit was not a waste exactly, but it pointed her toward a replacement when the original was still good. I left her with a working fob and she saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer had quoted.
