Got a call from a guy near the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara. His 2018 Range Rover would not respond to either fob. Doors would not unlock, start button did nothing, just the "smart key not detected" message sitting on the dash like it had been there a while. He had already swapped the CR2032 in both keys. No change.
I pulled up and started with the basics anyway. Popped both KOBJXF18A fobs open on his hood, checked the batteries, checked the board contacts. Both were fine. Clean CR2032 cells seated correctly.
So I went to the car. Plugged into the OBD port, pulled up the KVM. Module was responsive but had lost its key pairing data. This is the thing about the L405 platform: the KVM stores everything. Key profiles, frequency settings, the passive entry antenna mapping for all four doors and the tailgate. When it glitches, it looks like every key you own died overnight.
Re-registered both fobs to the module, ran the passive entry test on every door handle, checked the tailgate button, verified start-stop with each key individually. He stood there holding his second fob like a backup parachute the whole time.
The dealer had quoted him a tow to Thousand Oaks and a multi-day wait. He kept both his original keys, got it fixed on site, and saved a good chunk doing it.
