I was out in Hope Ranch on a Tuesday, the kind of morning where the marine layer still had not lifted off the hills near the water. The owner had a 2020 Range Rover sitting in the driveway and had already spent a weekend convinced one of his smart keys was failing.
He said the fob would work fine in the morning, then stop responding in the afternoon. Intermittent. The kind of thing that makes people doubt themselves.
I asked him to walk me through exactly what "stop responding" looked like. He said the door handles would not wake up, but the start button still detected the fob once he was inside. That told me something right away. The start button uses a different antenna path than the exterior handle sensors. If one works and the other does not, the fob itself is probably not the issue.
I pulled out the fob, popped it open on the hood, and checked the CR2032. It was original. Not dead, but reading low enough to cause the kind of marginal behavior he was describing. Exterior handle sensors on this generation are picky about signal strength near the low end of battery voltage. Swapped in a fresh CR2032, made sure the contacts were seated clean, and closed it back up.
Walked every door, tested the handle wake-up, checked the lock confirmation, and ran through all five buttons. Everything came back solid.
He said the dealer had quoted him a replacement fob and a programming session before even looking at the car. I was done in about twenty minutes.
