Got a call from someone near the Carpinteria Seal Sanctuary in Carpinteria. 2009 Range Rover, full size L322, sitting in a lot and refusing to start. The dash was cycling through warnings and the message center kept flashing "Key Not Recognized." He had already tried both of his flip keys.
When I pulled up, the first thing I noticed was the headlights were dim at idle. Checked the main battery and it was sitting at 11.9 volts. That is enough to crank but not enough to keep the KVM happy. On these L322s, the Keyless Vehicle Module is sensitive to voltage drops on the CAN bus, and when it browns out, it stops authenticating the PCF7945 transponder chip inside the key even though the key itself is fine.
I charged the battery enough to stabilize the system, then connected through the OBD port to clear the stored faults. Both flip keys started working again immediately. No new key needed.
But while I was there, he mentioned his second fob had a cracked case and the flip blade was loose. Swapped the internals into a fresh NT8-15K6014CFFTXA shell, tested the three buttons, lock, unlock, trunk, and made sure the blade snapped cleanly. Whole visit was maybe 25 minutes.
The dealer had quoted him a full day wait and a new key. He just needed someone who checked the simple stuff first.
