When a 2000 Lincoln Town Car key is done wrong, it doesn't "kind of work." It fails. The remote might lock and unlock perfectly while the theft light flashes fast during cranking and the engine never starts. Or push-to-start works a few times, then the BCM runs a deeper security check and rejects the fob entirely.
A warehouse manager at the distribution center in Oxnard had a key from another locksmith for his Town Car that stopped working after about eight days. It would start in the morning, then by evening the theft light would flash and push-to-start would say "No key detected." He thought the car had an electrical problem.
The other locksmith had used the wrong transponder chip generation. His Town Car needs a 4D63 80-bit chip, and using a 40-bit chip can pass initial programming but fail after deeper security verification over multiple start cycles. I used my VVDI2 to read what chip was in his bad key, confirmed it was wrong, and programmed a new key with the correct 80-bit chip. His fob, FCC ID , also had a weak battery making detection worse.
The replacement has been working for months and cost him 149. Dealer would have charged 335. The difference is the chip inside.
