Got a call from a woman in the Fremont North neighborhood in Oxnard. She had a 2004 Lincoln Town Car sitting in a church parking lot with a key that cranked but died after two seconds every time. Classic PATS rejection. The theft light on the dash was flashing like a strobe.
Turns out another locksmith had already been there. Charged her full price, cut the key, tried to program it, and left when it would not take. Told her the PATS module was fried.
It was not fried. I could see it on my IM608 the second I connected through the OBD-II port. The previous tech had not completed the timed security access window that Ford's system requires. The key data wrote temporarily but never committed to permanent memory. The PCM saw an unrecognized transponder and killed the fuel injector pulse, which is exactly what PATS is designed to do.
I used my FO38 Lishi to verify the existing blade cut was correct, so at least the other guy got that part right. Cleared the failed key data, ran a clean PATS learn through the full ten-minute security timer, and watched the theft indicator prove out: brief flash, then off. Her CWTWB1U793 started the car clean.
She had already paid the first locksmith. Then she paid me. Two locksmith bills plus a morning wasted. Could have been one call, done in about 35 minutes.
