A guy came through South Bank on his way up the coast. He'd been driving the Town Car for years, same key the whole time, and somewhere along the way the blade cracked at the shoulder. It didn't fully break until he was trying to unlock the door by hand in a parking lot near the water. Half the blade stayed in the lock.
Another locksmith he called told him the cylinder was done. New cylinder, new key, and a number that made him go quiet for a second.
I got there with my Lishi pick set and worked the broken fragment out without touching the wafer surfaces. No drill, no damage. Once it was out I decoded the lock directly, reading each wafer position off the cylinder to get the bitting. Cut two new blades on site, then ran the transponder programming through the OBD port for both keys. The immobilizer accepted them after the security timer cycled through.
When I handed him the keys he tried both in the door, then the ignition, then the remote. Just making sure. The car looked exactly the way he'd left it.
He mentioned what the other locksmith quoted. I didn't make a big deal of it, but the difference was real. Destructive entry should always be the last call, not the first one.
