A restaurant owner in Downtown Oxnard called about his 2009 Lincoln Town Car. Same story I hear constantly: bought it used with one remote head key, always meant to get a spare, never did.
He dropped the key on concrete and the shell cracked clean open. The emergency blade popped loose, the circuit board was sitting there exposed, and he was looking at it in two pieces on his driveway thinking the whole thing was done for.
I got out there and checked the board first. The CWTWB1U793 internals were fine. The 4D-63 transponder chip was still seated, the remote circuit was intact, and the CR2032 contacts were clean. That meant I didn't need to do an all-keys-lost procedure through the PATS module or pull the PCM for a parameter reset. Just a shell swap.
I moved the working board into a new housing, cut a fresh H75 blade by decoding his door lock, and tested everything: transponder start, lock, unlock, trunk release. All three remote buttons responded on the first press. Then I programmed a second key through the OBD-II port so he'd actually have the spare he kept putting off.
He went from a cracked key in pieces to two working remote head keys in about 40 minutes. If your fob cracks or splits but the board survives, bring the pieces. That detail saves real time and saves you a good chunk compared to starting from scratch.
