Got a call from the Rio Lindo neighborhood in Oxnard. Guy had a 2005 Lincoln Town Car Signature sitting in his driveway, one key left, and the remote buttons had quit months ago. He had been locking the doors by reaching inside and hitting the switch. Every single time.
He wanted a spare made before the last key disappeared too. Smart move.
I pulled up, checked his original key. H75 blade, 4D/63 80-bit chip, CWTWB1U793 remote head. The transponder still read fine through my T5 tester, but the CR2032 inside the remote head was completely dead. That explained the remote going dark. Swapped it, and his original key suddenly had working lock and unlock buttons again. He just stood there looking at it like it had betrayed him.
Then I cut and programmed a fresh remote head key as his spare. On PATS with an existing working key present, the 2005 Town Car lets you do an on-board two-key procedure: cycle the ignition with key one, cycle with key two within the timing window, and the PCM accepts the new transponder. No diagnostic tool needed for the add-a-key. I still verified the programming through OBD to make sure the PCM showed two keys registered.
Both remotes tested at all four doors, trunk release worked, transponder started the engine clean. He went from one half-dead key to two fully working ones in about twenty minutes. A dealer would have wanted him to leave the car there half the day. I did it in his driveway for a fraction of that.
