A guy in Nyeland Acres called me about his 2001 Town Car. The car was cranking fine but dying immediately every time. He had a spare key someone handed him years ago and he figured it would work. It didn't.
When I got there, the theft light told the story before I even touched the car. Turn the key, engine tries to catch, theft light flashes fast, car stalls. That pattern means the immobilizer read no valid transponder signal. The spare key he had was either a copy cut at a hardware store with no chip, or a chip that had never been enrolled to this car. Either way, the car wanted no part of it.
He still had his original key, which worked. That made it easier. I used the onboard relearn sequence to enroll the second key while both keys were present. The procedure on these has a specific timing window -- you move from the first key to the second within a set number of seconds or the cycle resets and you start over. Once it took, I turned the second key, watched the theft light do its normal brief flash and then go dark, and the car stayed running.
He looked at me like I had done something complicated. I told him it was the original key doing the work, not me. He appreciated that.
