Got a call from a guy over in the South Bank neighborhood in Oxnard. His 2001 Town Car had one key left and the bow was cracked almost in half. He'd been babying it for weeks, holding it together with electrical tape while he turned the ignition. He said the tape kept slipping and the key would twist without the chip staying centered in the column ring, and the theft light would flash rapid and the engine would just crank and crank.
I pulled up and the first thing I noticed was how clean this car was. Beige leather, wood trim, not a scratch on the dash. He clearly cared about it.
I decoded the door lock, cut a fresh H72-PT blank on the van, then connected my programmer to the OBD-II port under the dash. The 2001 Town Car uses PATS II, so there's a ten-minute security access timer you have to sit through. No shortcut. I ran the key learn procedure through the PCM, registered the new 4C transponder, and then did a second new key while I was there so he'd have a spare.
Tested both. Turn the key, watch the theft indicator light up solid for a couple seconds, then go dark. Engine fires. That is a clean PATS handshake. A fast blink means rejection. I ran three starts per key, no hesitation on any of them.
He tossed the taped-up key in his center console and just shook his head. Months of fighting that thing, and the whole job took about 25 minutes including the timer wait.
