Got a call from a guy over in the Nyeland Acres area of Oxnard. Warehouse manager at one of the distribution buildings off the main drag. His 2000 Lincoln Town Car had a replacement key from another locksmith, and it had quit starting after about eight days.
Weird part: the key would turn and crank just fine some mornings. By evening, the theft light on the dash would start flashing rapidly during cranking and the engine would refuse to fire. He was convinced it was an electrical gremlin. Spent a weekend poking at fuses.
When I got there, I pulled his bad key and read the transponder with my programmer. The other shop had cut a nice key, looked great, but they'd put in a 4D60 chip instead of the correct 4C glass chip. On PATS II, a wrong-generation transponder can sometimes squeak past the initial write procedure, then fail intermittently as the PCM runs its security verification on cold starts versus warm restarts. The system sees a response it doesn't fully trust and eventually locks the key out.
I cut a fresh H72-PT blank, seated a correct 4C Texas Instruments chip, and ran the PATS add-key procedure through OBD. Two 10-minute security waits, then the third cycle accepted the new key. Theft light went solid, then off. Clean start.
He stood there turning the car on and off three times in a row like he was testing whether it would change its mind. It did not.
