2000 Lincoln Town Car Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy over in Marina West, Oxnard, had a 2000 Town Car that started doing something strange.
It would fire up in the morning without a problem, but by the time he tried to leave work in the evening, the theft indicator would flash fast and the engine wouldn't crank. He'd wait a few minutes, try again, sometimes it would catch. Sometimes it wouldn't. He figured it was an electrical gremlin somewhere in the car.
He'd already had another locksmith out a couple weeks before. New key was cut and supposedly programmed. Seemed fine at first.
When I got to the car and pulled the key out, the theft light told the story before I even touched a tool. Fast flash on crank, no start. That pattern on this generation almost always points back to a transponder that isn't being read cleanly. I tested the key and confirmed the transponder inside wasn't the correct type for this vehicle. The previous job had used a blank with the wrong chip. It can pass the initial programming sequence and even start the car a handful of times before the immobilizer catches up during a deeper security check cycle.
I cut a new key using the correct transponder type for this generation, ran through the timed relearn procedure on site, and confirmed the theft light behavior was back to normal before I left. He asked if the car had some kind of computer problem. I told him the car was fine the whole time.
The dealer had been mentioned. He'd called them before he called me. Multi-day turnaround, tow required, parts to order. He wasn't interested in that route once he had a number to compare against.
