Out past the main stretch of Ojai, back in Matilija Canyon, a woman had a 1997 Town Car sitting in her driveway with a story attached. Another locksmith had already come out, cut a key, charged her, and left. The car would crank, run for about two seconds, then die. Classic PATS rejection. The theft indicator on the dash was flashing fast, which tells you the system never accepted the transponder. The other guy told her the PATS module was fried and she needed a dealer.
It was not a module problem.
First-gen PATS on these Town Cars uses a timed security access procedure. Two programmed keys are required to add a third through the on-board learn sequence. If you are doing an all-keys-lost job with only one new key and no existing programmed key, the process has to go through the diagnostic port. The previous locksmith had skipped the full learn cycle, so the transponder data was accepted temporarily but never written to the PCM's permanent memory.
I verified the blade cuts with my FO38 Lishi, connected my IM608 through OBD-II, cleared the old partial key data, and ran a clean PATS learn with the full security timer. Once the theft light proved out, one solid flash then off, the car started and stayed running.
She had already paid someone else for a job that was never finished. I just made sure it was done right this time.
